Faiz Ahmed Faiz (Old Karachi Memories)

Faiz was not only a great poet but also an educator, administrator, on his return from London in 1964, he rose to the position of principal at Abdullah Haroon College, Karachi. He remained principal for eight years, until 1972.



In 1972, when the government took over all the educational institutions in national custody, Faiz Ahmed did not consider it acceptable to take up public service and retired from the college's principalship. Faiz Sahib started his career as a teacher from MAO College Amritsar in 1935.


Responding to why Faiz chose to become the head of the college in Karachi's poor slum Lyari, Faiz replied to Dr. Ghulam Hussain Azhar in an interview, an interview by Dr. Tahir, The question was 'Why did you accept the leadership of this organization'? Faiz Sahib said, "The area where Haji Abdullah Haroon founded the college had no education and facilities besides high school. The majority of the area is poor people, fishermen, drivers and working professionals. People who could not send their children to college, this area was the center of bad people. Every kind of unprofessional business was done here. Often they were left on the wrong path from childhood, where Abdullah Haroon built an orphanage. Had reached high school level, nothing else, his (Haji Abdullah Haroon) successor engagements were anything but, only Lady Nusrat Aaron had Interested in the drawer. On his return from London, he ordered us to take over. We went and looked at the area, it was a very backward area, built an intermediate college here, then a college degree, then a technical school and then an auditorium, some money was spent from the Aaron industry, some we provided, the largest of the fishermen. Cooperative Society Bani, he made us a director, we decided to provide free education to the children at the expense of the society and the institution should bear all the expenses of the children, the majority of the students in this college were given free education. "
